US Open of Watercross - Hydro Turf Freestyle Report

The Hydro Turf freestylers were able to demonstrate their flat water skills on the Alabama River and Jeremy "Parr Diddy" Parr made some very good transitions from finesse moves to big inverted tricks included a nicely executed backflip to backflip combination.  Jason "The Destroyer" Stoyer also looked very impressive tossing a massive under flip and a one handed backflip in his two minute run.  Unfortunately for "The Destroyer" his lanyard came undone during his run costing him valuable time and points.

That left the door open for Michael Ratti to slide into the second spot.  It is an aggregate scoring system that counts both days of competition so Stoyer is still in the hunt, but when I saw him in the pits he was obviously upset about how his run went.  Defending US Open of Watercross Champion, Johnny "Left Side" Leftly put up a respectable number but without a flat water backflip in his bag of tricks he was unable to crack the top three.

US Open of Watercross  -  Ski GP

Pro Ski GP class the favorites Chris MacClugage and Rob Flores both had poor gate picks and neither of them had a good line to the holeshot.  Adding insult to injury for Flo' was the fact that he had to race a borrowed boat and was only able to manage a 6th place finish in the moto.  The G.O.A.T fared a little better, eventually managing to work his way past Bill "Hurricane"  Haig for 4th, but the story of the day was the newcomer to the pro ranks Josh "Blockhead" Block.  They young Ohio rider found himself in 3rd position with two laps to go and the Monster Energy Mac Racing rider MacClugage breathing down his neck.

But the young gun showed maturity beyond his years and held off the legend for his first top three as a pro.  Up front Rick Sherker looked very smooth running all by himself and stretching out his lead about his Fly Racing boat.  The other surprise of the day came from Yamaha's Jimmy "Neutron" Cebulski.  Jimmy and his wife had a baby four weeks ago and he missed the first stop in Panama City Beach, but he straight brought it today finishing second and setting himself up for a good shot at the overall.

US Open of Watercross  -  Runabout Open

From the opening ceremonies right into the pro classes, first up was the Pro Runabout Open. Claude Clayton from Tupelo, MS got the nod from the computer and had gate choice and he decided to take the spot closest to the tower and that worked out well for him.  He pulled the holeshot and led three laps with Flyin' Brian Baldwin and Dustin Farthing in tow. By the end of the second lap "El Diablo" had dispatched Baldwin and set his sights on Clayton.
"Tweeker" did his best to hold off the Monster Energy Kawasaki of Farthing but eventually the Judge Motorsports tuned rig was just too much for Clayton and he slid back to 2nd position.  There were a few swaps for the 4th and 5th position which turned out to be where the battle really raged.  The National Guard Yamaha of Trey Frame battle for several laps with the number 81 of Eric Francis and their hard work paid dividends because both Clayton and Baldwin missed buoys and that put Frame and Francis in 2nd and 3rd respectively in the final moto 1 standings.  Dustin Farthing steered clear of any mishaps and finish solidly in 1st on his Monster Energy Kawasaki.

US Open of Watercross - Hydro Turf Freestyle Report

Our first winner of the year didn't come from the racing side of the weekend's competition but from the Hydro-Turf Freestyle Competition.  Jason "the Destroyer" Stoyer built on his stellar performance Saturday and easily took the win.  Stoyer used a borrowed boat on Saturday but on Sunday he had his own rig and he launched quite a few back flip variations along with a huge under flip that he landed flawlessly.  Jeremy "Parr Diddy" Parr tried to match "the Destroyer", but Parr was also on an unfamiliar boat and came up short on his signature trick, the Pinwheel, and had to settle for 2nd.  Parr Diddy declared "we'll get him next time!" Michael Ratti showed why he is a former amateur national champ and put up a rock-solid performance on his way to a 3rd place finish. Make sure you check out the latest from Hydro-Turf!

US Open of Watercross  -  Ski GP

In the Ski GP class Chris "The G.O.A.T." Macclugage capped off his return to the national stage with a sweep of all three motos.  Macclugage won in convincing fashion and there is no doubt everyone else will have to elevate their game to catch the Factory Yamaha rider.  The defending national champion in the Ski GP class, Rob "Flo" Flores had his share of difficulties this weekend, including a mechanical issue that forced him to use his stock boat in the open class, but he was still able to salvage a second overall and keep himself right in the thick of things in the chase for a national title.

Jimmy "Eats World" Wilson had his own set of issues and ended up riding a boat decked out in pink, but that didn't deter the Hurricane Racing rider from getting a podium finish on the first weekend of the year.  It was a great opening round on the UWP-IJSBA Watercross National Tour and we are looking forward to the U.S. Open of Watercross in Montgomery, AL on Memorial Day weekend.  Become a fan on FaceBook at uwpinc.com and check your local listings for the national television broadcast of this race on the Beach Sports Network.

US Open of Watercross  -  Runabout Open

The Pro-Am Runabout Open class was filled with carnage and going into the final moto the top three positions were still up for grabs.  However once the flag dropped for the start Dustin "El Diablo" Farthing wasted no time making it clear he would be a force to be reckoned with all season.

Erminio Iantosca was able to take the holeshot and hold the lead for the first lap, but Farthing got under "The Boss of Watercross" on the first turn of lap two and never looked back, lapping the entire field en route to his first overall win of the season.  Brian Baldwin rode consistently in all three motos and was able to sneak past Iantosca for the second spot on the box and the defending national champion had to settle for 3rd aboard his RIVA Racing powered ride.

PRO-AM RUNABOUT OPEN

If the opening motos of the 2011 IJSBA National Tour are any indication of how the rest of the year will go we are in for a wild ride!  In the Pro-Am Runabout Open class things got dicey right out of the gate but Brian Baldwin was able to get to the first marker cleanly and open up a gap over Dustin "El Diablo" Farthing with Erminio "The Boss of Watercross" Iantosca rounding out the top three.

At the halfway point Baldwin clipped a buoy and had to circle back to pick it up which gave Farthing a chance to close things up.  Dustin chased Baldwin for the final three laps but was unable to make a clean pass and had to settle for 2nd in moto 1.  Trey Frame on his National Guard, Factory Yamaha battled all the way to the checkers with the RIVA rider Erminio Iantosca but came up a little short and Iantosca claimed the final podium spot.

PRO-AM SKI GP

In the Ski GP class the Jimmy "Eats World" Wilson took the hole shot but with the heavy surf he was quickly over taken by both Chris Maclugage and Rob Flores.  Rockin' Robbie and the G.O.A.T battled back and forth for the entire moto swapping the lead several times until Rob finally lost an edge and took a water sample from the Gulf.  With about 3 laps to go Flores wisely decided to settle in for 2nd place and conserve himself for tomorrow's two moto day.

Behind him Wilson dumped and allowed teammate Bill "Hurricane" Haig to sneak by for the 3rd position and Wilson had to hold off a late charge by Josh Block to hang on to the 4th position.

Our Freestylers got gnarly next with Michael Ratti kicking things off.  He wasted no time getting inverted pulling two back flips in his first three tricks and posting a solid number from the pole position.  Johnny Leftly and Jeff Bolte put in good showings but when Jason "the Destroyer" Stoyer hit the surf he posted the top score of the day.  That only left defending national champ Jeremy "Parr Diddy" Parr with a shot and although he looked very sharp he was on a borrowed boat and was unable to best the score by put up by Stoyer.

UWP started 2011 out by signing two 3 year agreement with both Panama City Beach, Florida and Lake Hartwell Marketing Alliance, six counties surrounding Lake Hartwell in Georgia and South Carolina.

UWP newest venues for 2011 include Montgomery, AL, Belle River, Ontario Canada, Colonial Beach, VA; Belle River, Canada – the “Canadian Nationals” will follow the Rochester tour stop and will carry one of the largest purses for the 2011 tour!

This event will also hosts the “Roasting of the Champions” and is where we can have a little fun (at our champion’s expense) while honoring our 2010 champions! Give yourselves a few extra days to enjoy the rich history and southern hospitality of Montgomery, AL.

June 18-19, 2011 – Grand Prix of Watercross: Racine, WI set on Father’s Day weekend and let boys be boys! Racine sits between Milwaukee and Chicago right on Lake Michigan, and when there is a race on one of the great lakes you never know what to expect! Racine is a fun city, high-speed all day and outstanding food and fun at night! This was a great family weekend last year!

July 9-10, 2011 – Toyota Water Jam: Rochester, NY has been part of the watercross national tour since 1999 – last year the event moved to a new site in Rochester, Durand Eastman Park. This new venue gives competitors the room to spread out and really enjoy the weekend in the sun!

Maybe we should all stop by the George Washington Birthplace National Monument and checkout some history of our great country.

August 13-14, 2011 – Triple Crown of Watercross: Lake Hartwell Marketing Alliance did an amazing job with the 2010 tour stop and UWP knew that we would be back for years to come.
